Centre for Applied Health Research Team

The research team is headed by the Scientific Director. In addition there are two full-time, permanent positions, including a Research Statistician and a Research Coordinator. Currently, we are hiring for a full-time, temporary, Postdoctoral Fellow. The activities of the Research Department are further complimented by a number of individuals working on specific projects.

Dr. Michel Bédard is the Scientific Director for the Centre for Applied Health Research at St. Joseph’s Care Group. He is also a Professor of Health Sciences, and Medicine, and the Director of the Centre for Research on Safe Driving, at Lakehead University. Dr. Bédard’s main research focus is on automobile driving, family caregiving, and mental illness. He is the author/co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and 200 scientific presentations and has received over 12 million dollars in research funding as Principal or Co-investigator. He has received several research awards including a Canada Research Chair in Aging and Health he held from 2003 to 2013 and a Premier’s Excellence Research Award from the province of Ontario.

Hillary Maxwell, PhD Candidate, MPH, works as the Research Statistician at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG). Hillary develops and advises statistical methodology, conducts statistical analyses, and interprets and translates statistical results for various SJCG research projects (e.g., SJCG Client Satisfaction Survey), and external project collaborations. Her experience includes externally-funded studies and projects initiated from within St. Joseph’s Care Group.

Shayna Cummings Research Coordinator

Shayna Cummings, MSc, works as the Research Coordinator at the Centre for Applied Health Research with St. Joseph’s Care Group. Shayna coordinates and assists the teams’ research projects throughout the research cycle, from conception to result dissemination. This coordination and assistance includes project consultations, literature searches, funding and Research Ethics Board applications, data collection, data analyses, and knowledge mobilization activities. These knowledge mobilization activities involve preparing reports, manuscripts, and presentations, along with organizing and planning events, such as the annual Showcase of Health Research. Shayna also provides mentorship and supervision for research interns, research assistants, practicum students, postdoctoral fellows, and volunteers with the Centre for Applied Health Research.
